That’s it! The installation is complete. Let’s jump in and set up custom slugs for your affiliates.
Enabling custom slugs for your affiliates
You can offer your affiliates the ability to set a custom slug from their account page. If your affiliates set their slug, they’ll be able to promote your website with a custom referral link, built with this slug.
For example, let’s say you have an affiliate named Dwayne Johnson, with the ID 21. This affiliate’s default referral links will look something like this: https://yourawesomesite.com/?aff=21
With the custom slug, the referral link can look something link this: https://yourawesomesite.com/?aff=DwayneJohnson
As you can notice, the second links is way more personal.
To offer all your affiliates the possibility of setting their own slugs, just follow these steps:
- Navigate to your WordPress admin dashboard > SliceWP > Settings > General (tab) > Custom Affiliate Slug (section).
- Here, turn on the Allow Sitewide Slug Creation switch and save your settings.
As you can notice, this will allow slug creation sitewide, for all your affiliates. In some cases however, you may not want to let everyone set their own slugs, but offer the option only for a few.
You can do this by enabling the option from the affiliate’s admin edit page. Here’s how:
- Navigate to your WordPress admin dashboard > SliceWP > Settings > General (tab) > Custom Affiliate Slug (section).
- Here, make sure the Allow Sitewide Slug Creation option is disabled.
- Then, navigate to SliceWP > Affiliates and click to edit the affiliate you wish to have the slug option enabled.
- In the affiliate’s edit page, under the Custom Slug section, set the Allow Slug Creation option to Enabled and update the affiliate.
Setting up random affiliate slugs for your affiliate program
In some cases, you may not want to offer your affiliates the option to customize their slug at all. But, you may want the referral links to use a random string to identify the affiliate, instead of the default affiliate ID.
In this case, let’s say one of your affiliate’s referral links looks like this: https://yourawesomesite.com/?aff=21
With a random slug set for the affiliate, the referral link could look like this: https://yourawesomesite.com/?aff=mjPyxACcXRLrrLrvjwxx
As you can notice, the value of the aff variable is a random string. This string can be automatically generated when the affiliate registers for your affiliate program and it can be used to identify the affiliate, instead of using the affiliate’s ID.
Here’s how you can set up random slugs:
- Navigate to your WordPress admin dashboard > SliceWP > Settings > General (tab) > Custom Affiliate Slug (section).
- Here, firstly enable the Auto Random Slugs option.
- Then, select whether you want these strings to be alphanumerical or just alphabetical and also set the length you wish these strings to have.
- Lastly, set the Affiliate Referral Link Format option to With affiliate custom slug and save the settings. This way, the default referral link will be built using the affiliate’s slug, instead of the affiliate’s ID.
Now, each time a new affiliate signs up for your affiliate program, a random and unique slug will be created for them.
That’s it! You now have custom affiliate slugs set up and ready to go.
